Inevitably, when our clients call to inquire about auto insurance we hear a variation of the following questions:
1. Which cars cost the most/least to insure?
2. Which cars are the most affordable for our new teen driver?
3. How much will it be to insure “XYZ” car? - This depends, that's why its best to do a full quote.
Lucky for you 24/7 Wall St. completed an analysis which addresses these exact questions. The least expensive cars to insure are small to midsize SUV’s and the most expensive cars are the large or midsize luxury cars. Now why is this the case? It boils down to safety. Generally speaking a larger car has the ability to keep its passengers safer during a crash vs. a smaller sedan leading to lower claims payout and cheaper insurance premiums.
A question everyone always wants to know is, “How do insurance companies determine how much to charge for a car?” A good amount of research goes into it. In fact, insurers fund a nonprofit research organization called “The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety” whose sole mission is to collect data on insurance claims, cost and safety ratings. The six types of insurance costs that are evaluated are: collision, property damage, comprehensive, personal injury, medical payments, and bodily injury. Insurance companies use this data to determine base rates to insure a car. Then they factor in other variables such as company profit, driving record, driving experience, geographic location, credit (some states), annual miles driven, discounts, etc…
The data below is based on model years 2014-2016 sold in the U.S. We hope this helps you in your personal research for your next vehicle. While we advise clients throughout California, we live, work, and play in the counties of Ventura and Los Angeles and communities of Simi Valley and San Fernando Valley. Give us a call and we can run a no obligation auto insurance quote based on your family’s unique situation.
